The author of the book was the son of Michal Jankowski - an insurgent exiled to Siberia, who settled in the Russian Far East. In honor of this distinguished naturalist, the Sidemi Peninsula was renamed Jankowski Peninsula. Yurji continued his father's work. His book recounts his many adventures in the taiga - from hunting tigers to protecting deer from poachers. The Polish edition also includes memoirs about the Jankowski family written by Swedish traveler Sven Bergman and American missionary Donald Clark.
